This Act entered into force on 20 May 2001.

Abstract

This Act, which is composed of 103 articles, provides for the protection of animal health and regulates provisions concerning infectious diseases, health prevention, costs of animal health, veterinary activities, concessions, professional education in veterinary medicine, registers, databases and information system, competences of national bodies, inspection, and the rights and obligations of legal and natural persons. Veterinary medicine aims are: (1) protecting and improving the health of animals; (2) protecting the health of animals against infectious and other diseases; (3) identification and diagnosis of diseases and treatment of sick animals; (4) providing measures to protect the public against zoonoses, food-borne infections and intoxications by preventing and combating these diseases and the prevention of transmission of diseases from animals to humans; (5) provision of health products and food of animal origin; (6) providing medical suitability of water for animals and care for the quality of water supply; (7) provision of reproductive and productive capacity of animals in terms of animal health; (8) providing measures to protect the environment from pollution by pathogens that occur in animals, and hygiene and environmental suitability in terms of animal health; (9) protecting animals from cruelty and suffering, and welfare of animals; (10) veterinary education, raising awareness and informing the public.
