Abstract

This National Plan of Action for the conservation and management of sharks and their long-term sustainable use is based on FAO's International Plan of Action for the Conservation and Management of Sharks and has been developed by the National Marine Fisheries Service (NMFS), in consultation with stakeholders, to fulfil the national responsibility of the United States also with a view to the Code of Conduct for Responsible Fisheries. The NPOA gives a comprehensive description of the fisheries management system of the U.S. generally and for specific fisheries, lies down principles of management (precautionary approach, protect vulnerable life history stages, protect vulnerable species, minimize waste, prioritize limited resources), and sets out initiatives such as data collection and assessment, research and development of mitigation measures, bi-annual reporting and monitoring on sharks by management units, education and public awareness.
