Abstract

The objective of this Law is to ratify the United Nations Convention to combat desertification and mitigate the effects of drought in countries experiencing serious drought and/or desertification, particularly in Africa, through effective action at all levels, supported by international cooperation and partnership arrangements, in the framework of an integrated approach which is consistent with Agenda 21, with a view to contributing to the achievement of sustainable development in affected areas. The text of the Law follows the Convention’s structure consisting of 6 Parts divides into 40 articles and 5 Annexes as follows: Introduction (Part I); General Provisions (Part II); Action Programmes, Scientific and Technical Cooperation and Supporting Measures (Part III); Institutions (Part IV); Procedures (Part V); Final Provisions (Part VI); Regional Implementation Annex for Africa (Annex I); Regional Implementation Annex for Asia (Annex II); Regional Implementation Annex for Latin America and the Caribbean (Annex III); Regional Implementation Annex for the Northern Mediterranean (Annex IV); Regional Implementation Annex for Central and Eastern Europe (Annex V).
