Abstract

This Notice, issued by the Committee of Management of the City Council of Freetown, in exercise of the powers conferred upon it by section 42 of the Freetown Municipality Act, no. 20 of 1973, concerns definition, control and management of slaughter houses. The Notice provides for: application for registration as a butcher or assistant butcher and related approval or refusal by the Committee; imposition of fees and duties; control and inspection of slaughter house; days and hours of opening; notification concerning description and number of animals to be slaughtered; register of slaughtered animals; examination and health certificate of butchers; certification issued by a veterinary officer stating that the animal is fit for consumption and circumstances under which the certificate cannot be issued; provisions concerning cleanliness and order inside the slaughterhouse; provisions concerning respect of animals to be slaughtered and prohibition of unnecessary pain; stunning procedure and methods; sanitation procedures and inspection of meat; offences and penalties.
