Centres specified in the First Schedule are to be controlled by the Institute (sect. 5). The Institute shall promote the development, improvement and protection of the fishing industry in the Republic of Tanzania through research and collection of information and data regarding fishing (sect. 6). A Board of Directors is established and shall be responsible for the exercise of the functions and management of the Institute. Powers and operations of the Institute in relation to fisheries research are outlined in Part III. A Chief Fisheries Officer shall be appointed and shall facilitate the operation of the business of the Institute and promote and conduct fisheries research.
