In particular the Act provides, among other things, for the regulation of sustainable exploitation and utilisation of sand resource and other excavated material, registration of sand dealers and sand harvesting associations, environmental impact assessment and the rehabilitation and protection of the environment from harmful effects of sand harvesting and related activities. It also enables communities to participate in the management of sand harvesting. Sand harvesting from any riverbed shall be undertaken in a manner that allows adequate reserve of the sand to be retained to ensure water retention.
