Subject Livestock Keyword Animal health Pests/diseases Quarantine Inspection Offences/penalties Geographical area Africa, Eastern Africa, Landlocked Developing Nations, Least Developed Countries Abstract Every owner of stock affected or suspected of being affected with any disease shall: (a) as far as practicable keep that stock separate from stock not so affected; (b) as soon as is reasonably practicable give notice of the stock being so affected or suspected of being so affected to the nearest departmental officer, police officer or Administrative Officer, who shall immediately notify the Veterinary Officer. Whenever at any place, whether within or outside Zambia, there exists, or is suspected to exist, any disease which is likely to affect stock, the Minister or an authorized officer may make quarantine orders as specified in section 4. Section 5 defines regulatory powers of the Minister or an authorized officer in respect of seizure, detainment or destruction of infected or illegally handled stock. Section 6 defines power of authorized officer when any person fails or refuses to comply with an order. Various other powers of authorized officers are specified. Remaining sections prescribe penalties and provide for responsibilities of person in control of stock in transit, records to be kept by carriers, indemnity, compensation and Regulation making powers of the Minister.
