Abstract

This Act makes provision for the licensing, operation, control and inspection of slaughterhouses and abattoirs and provides rules for the slaughtering of healthy or diseased means cattle, pigs, sheep, horses, deer, goats and buffalo. The Chief Meat Inspector is charged with the general administration of this Act; and shall have the powers and functions of a Meat Inspector under this Act. The Chief Meat Inspector may, by notice in the National Gazette, appoint Meat Inspectors for the purposes of this Act (sects. 3 and 4). Powers of Meat Inspectors are defined in section 5. The Minister may, by notice in the National Gazette, declare a slaughterhouse erected or proposed to be erected to be an abattoir for the purpose of this Act and may declare an area to be a central killing area in relation to a slaughterhouse. No premises or proposed premises in a central killing area may be licensed as a slaughterhouse under this Act (sect. 15). Sections 17 and following contain rules relative to slaughtering and the operation of slaughterhouses. Section 36 allows only for sale of meat of specified origin. Section 37 concerns the inspection and branding of meat and section 38 prohibits the illegal branding of meat. Section 41 provides for regulation making powers of the Head of State.
