Abstract

The purpose of this Act is to protect the life and property of the public by prescribing matters necessary for the maintenance of seaworthiness and safety of navigation. The Act shall apply to either the people of the Republic of Korea or to ships owned by the Korean government, except for ships falling listed in article 3. Article 45 rules that the Minister shall establish the Korea Ship Safety Technology Authority, in order to secure safety in respect of a ship’s navigation and research/develop and supply the technology in respect of a ship or ship’s facilities by being empowered by the Minister’s affairs or when acting for the Minister. The text consists of 89 articles divided into 13 chapters as follows: General provisions (I); Ship inspections (II); Type approval of ship’s articles or small ships (III); Type approval of containers (IV); Criteria for ship facility (V); Steps for safe navigation (VI); Korea Ship Safety Technology Authority (VII); Agency for inspection affairs (VIII); Port State Control (IX); Special inspections (X); Supplementary provisions (XI); Penal provisions (XIII).
