Abstract

This Act amends title 27 PNC principally to establish a shark haven in the Republic of Palau’s territorial waters, contiguous zone, and exclusive economic zone and to prohibit in those marine areas the catching, capture, or intentionally fishing for sharks and shark finning. However, a vessel wholly owned by Palauan citizens or a business entity wholly owned by Palauan citizens may catch, incidental to other fishing activities, not more than one shark in any given calendar day, so long as the shark is landed whole, reported to the Bureau of Marine Resources and the Division of Marine Law Enforcement on the day it is caught, and the shark is used for a non-commercial purpose that is either personal or traditional. The Act also concerns reporting and review of shark protection and international cooperation on shark protection measures.
