Abstract This law repeals Saxony-Anhalt's forestry law of 1994. It serves to implement Directive 2001/42/EC of the European Parliament and of the Council of 27 June 2001 on the assessment of the effects of certain plans and programs on the environment as well as Directive 2011/92/EU of the European Parliament and of the Council of 13 December 2011 on the assessment of the effects of certain public and private projects on the environment (as amended by Article 1 of Directive 2014/52/EU). The objective of this law is to protect the forest for its economic use (utility) and due to its importance and value for the environment. In particular this law serves to protect the climate, the water balance, air purity, soil fertility, the agriculture and infrastructure and to preserve the forest for recreational purposes. It aims to maintain, and if necessary, to increase and to ensure its proper management in a sustainable manner. It serves to promote forestry, to support forest owners in fulfilling their obligations under this law, to strike a balance between the general interest and the interests of forest owners as well as to ensure the free entry and use of the area.
