Its aim is to make food, substances and products safer thus helping to protect the health of consumers. The three main areas of its work - food safety, product safety and chemicals safety - encompass a wide range of topics, such as: biological safety of foods and zoonosis; hygiene in the food sector; food ingredients; nutrition risks, genetically modified foods, contamination of food with environmental toxins, feed safety, pesticides and biocides, intoxications, safe transport of toxic substances, nanotechnology in food, consumer products and alternative methods to animal experiments. Furthermore, the Federal Risk Assessment Office provides information on possible, identified and assessed risks which foods, substances and products may entail for consumers. It seeks to present the entire assessment process in a transparent manner to the public at large.
