Abstract

This Resolution of the Inter-American Tropical Tuna Commission (IATTC), made pursuant to Article VII, paragraph 1 (f), of the Antigua Convention and recognizing that measures should be implemented to allow silky shark populations to rebuild in the Convention Area, places obligations of CPCs to take maesures to protect silky sharks. These measures concern: prohibition of retaining on board, transshipping, landing, or storing, in part or whole, carcasses of silky sharks caught by purse-seine vessels in the IATTC Convention Area; limits on bycatch of silky sharks caught by longline vessels; prohibition of fishing in silky shark pupping areas; gear restrictions; limits on catch of small silky sharks during a given fishing trip; dataa collection and reporting. The Commission shall prioritize research on silky sharks by the scientific staff in specified areas.
