PNTN was established by Resolution of the Council of Ministers No. 112/98 of 25 August, considering the fact that the areas classified increase in the national and international context as tourist destinations where the existence of well-preserved natural and cultural values are inseparable attributes of nature tourism. PNTN is main objectives are in the promotion and affirmation of the values and potential of hazardous areas, such as defined in Decree-Law No. 142/2008 and other areas with natural and cultural values, providing the creation of innovative and sustainable tourism products and services within the municipalities covered by these areas and promoting integration and sustainability of the following sectors: conservation of nature; local development; qualification of tourism; diversification of tourism; and dissemination and promotion of cultural heritage.
