Abstract

This Resolution of the Council of Ministers approves the strategic guidelines and recommendations for the implementation of a National Network of Marine Protected Areas (RNAMP). Under Article 199 of the Constitution, the Council of Ministers establishes as follows: Adoption of the strategic guidelines and recommendations contained in the report produced by the Working Group on Marine Protected Areas; Development of the concept of RNAMP, within the framework of the National System of Classified Areas, as an eco-systemic representative and coherent network of marine protected and classified areas, whose fundamental objective is to preserve the marine natural heritage, safeguarding structure, functioning and resilience of ecosystems, as a basic integrative infrastructure that promotes the development and quality of life in Portugal for current and future generations; Establishing that the RNAMP fits in the protected and classified marine areas created under the applicable legal regimes, regarding their planning, management and powers of regional governments; Identify areas of potential ecological value, indicated in the report, as a basis for the procedure for creating classified and protected marine areas and for preparing their management plans, with appropriate adaptations to safeguard existing activities with high socio-economic impact.
