Abstract

Requirements and conditions for slaughterhouses using cages, and with capacity of production not exceed 200 birds or 150 rabbits are: (a) slaughterhouses must be built in cement; (b) floors shall be paved with suitable tiles; (c) walls shall be covered with porcelain for at least half of the height; (d) windows shall be protected with metal nets to prevent the entry of insects; (e) heights of slaughterhouses shall be at least 3 metres; (f) surfaces of windows shall be at least 1/6 of the surface of the floor; (f) establishment of separate divisions for feed; (g) provided with a drinking water source; (h) electricity shall be guaranteed; (i) necessary canals for sewerage waters shall be created; (j) cages shall be placed at least a metre and a half above the floor level; (k) slaughterhouses shall be provided with a wash basin not less than 80 cm deep; (l) extinguishers and a first-aid box shall be provided; (m) slaughterhouses shall be cleaned and disinfected daily; and, (n) workers shall undergo periodic medical. Requirements and conditions for slaughterhouses which use fences include all requirements mentioned above, and the following: (a) fences shall be at least one square metre for every 7 birds or rabbits; and (b) floors shall be covered with sawdust which shall be changed every week. Requirements and conditions for slaughterhouses with a production capacity of more than 200 birds or 150 rabbits include: (a) industries shall be far from residential areas, public establishments, and municipality and administrative units; (b) slaughterhouses shall be built in the opposite direction of the wind to prevent pollution of the environment; (c) a proper sewerage system shall be installed; (d) industries shall be distant at least 1.5 km from animal-breeding centres, veterinary and medicine industries, infant food industries, and water sources; (e) slaughtering divisions shall have a section for birds, poultry and rabbits with separate slaughtering-places, processing divisions, storage divisions, and divisions for gathering blood and residues; (f) workers and visitors shall be guaranteed safety conditions; (g) necessary measures shall be taken to prevent the spreading of smells, refuses and waste out of the installations; (h) animals shall be transported with suitable means; (i) cages and transportation means shall be cleaned and disinfected regularly; (j) a previous authorization by the Ministry of Environment, Ministry of Industry and the Ministry of Agriculture and Land Reclamation shall be obtained.
