Abstract This Resolution approves the National Irrigation Programme (PNI) which establishes the global strategic guidelines, the legal and technical standards for the development of irrigation systems throughout its national territory and the respective planning and financing mechanisms. In addition, it defines the institutional framework that ensures its implementation, monitoring and evaluation. Its general objectives are: a) Establishing a national instrument for action, management and support for the development of irrigation with strategic options; b) Establishing a framework planning for irrigation development and investment in the context of river basins and agricultural development; c) Ensuring the sustainable expansion of irrigated agriculture including the rational and efficient use of land and water resources; d) Contributing to the socio-economic development of Mozambique. The Specific Objectives are: a) Prioritizing areas with good irrigation development potential for future projects. b) Mapping and identifying existing irrigation infrastructures; c) Identifying water availability and needs in the context of river basins; d) Irrigation planning based on the rational and sustainable use of land and water resources; e) Identifying the most adequate institutional capacity building needs for the National Irrigation Institute (INIR).
