This Resolution enters into force on the day of its publication.
Abstract

This Resolution, consisting of 10 articles, regulates the authorised activities related to scientific biological collections, including: collection, acquisition, maintenance, distribution, supply, isolation, authentication, donation, exchange, consultation, loan, transfer, identification, taxonomic determination, characterization, transportation, shipping and delivery of biological material and related issues. It is the responsibility of public or private institutions maintaining scientific biological collections to perform the following activities: contemplate the scientific biological collections in the planning and strategic institutional objectives; define internal policies for the management and access to the collection of scientific biological collections and related information; appoint permanent staff duly qualified, according to the peculiarities of each scientific biological collection; ensure integral and permanent maintenance of collections; assure financial resources for scientific biological collections for their sustainability in the short, medium and long term; guarantee adequate structure for the performance of activities related to scientific biological collections; meet biosafety standards for each scientific biological collection and ensure that measures are in place to prevent loss, misuse or deliberate release of biological material, pathogenic or not, and toxin producing organisms or parts (bioprotection); meet standards for the protection of collections against fire, flood and natural disasters, deterioration through infestation of insects and other living organisms such as fungi and mites; encourage the development of projects and initiatives aimed at the knowledge, conservation and sustainable use of biodiversity.
