Abstract This Regulation of the Government of the Republic of Slovenia, which is composed of 16 articles and one Annex, lays down: (1) criteria for assessment of surface water; (2) environmental quality standards for determining the chemical status and criteria, and environmental quality standards for determining the ecological status of surface waters; (3) the way of monitoring of surface water. This Regulation for the chemical status of surface water establishes: (a) chemical parameters for determining the chemical status of surface water; (b) environmental quality standards for the parameters of the chemical status of surface water; (c) criteria for determining the chemical status of surface water. This Regulation for the ecological status of surface water establishes: (a) elements of quality assessment of ecological status and ecological potential of surface water; (b) metrics for the evaluation of individual biological components of ecological status; (c) parameters for the evaluation of different chemical quality elements supporting the biological elements of ecological status; (d) parameters for the evaluation of some physical and chemical quality elements supporting the biological elements of ecological status; (e) parameters for the evaluation of individual hydromorphological quality elements supporting the biological elements of ecological status; (f) classes and descriptive definitions of classes of ecological status of surface water; (g) limit values for particular classes of ecological status for the evaluation of the biological elements of ecological status; (h) limit values for different classes of ecological status for specific pollutants; (i) limit values for particular classes of ecological status of physical and chemical parameters; (j) criteria for evaluation of individual elements of ecological status; (k) criteria for assessing the ecological status of water.
