Biosphere reserve “Laplandskiy” was set up by decision of UNESCO and is part of the World network of biosphere reserves. Reserve shall have the following purposes: (a) conservation, recovery and reproduction of wild fauna and biological diversity, and ecosystem preservation; (b) research; (c) ecological monitoring; (d) ecological education; and (e) training of scientific personnel. Total land area of biosphere reserve is 278 435 ha and it is locate on the territory of Murmansk province. The following activities shall be prohibited on the territory of reserve: (a) all types of hunting; (b) industrial fisheries; (c) land reclamation and irrigation; (d) construction; (e) application of chemicals and fertilizers; (f) timber extraction, logging and procurement of non-timber forest products; and (h) introduction and acclimatization of living organisms.
