Abstract This Regulation, as in accordance with the provisions of the Serbian Law on the recognition of varieties of agricultural plants, prescribes the methods of testing the maize variety in the experimental field and in the laboratory, in order to recognize the variety. Essential characteristics of a specific maize variety are those production and use characteristics which are examined in order to determine the production and use value of that variety in relation to the following factors: 1) grain yield; 2) grain quality; 3) moisture content in the grain at the time of harvest; 4) resistance to lodging and breaking of the tree; 5) resistance or tolerance to diseases and pests; 6) tolerance to a particular herbicide. The maize variety shall be tested in an experimental field in accordance with the application for recognition of the variety in which the owner of the variety, or his authorized representative, proposes that the maize variety be classified into the appropriate ripening group according to FAO classification (100, 200, 300, 400, 500, 600, 700 or 800).
