Abstract

The Regulation of Salt Iodization aims to set provisions to promote salt iodization, improve public health, provide physical and mental development, provide proper nutrition, reduce malnutrition caused by lack of macronutrients, and improve the women and children’s health. The Regulation consists of 5 Chapters, which is divided into 30 articles: General Provisions (I); Salt Iodization National Board (II); Iodized Salt Production (III) Authorities and Duties (IV); Final Provisions (V). The provisions of this Regulation are applicable to iodized manufacturers and suppliers and food service facilities. The National Board of Salt Iodization is established to make decisions and take actions regarding salt iodization in the country. The Minister of Public Health is the president of the Board. The Board is the responsible authority to: draw policies and strategies regarding salt iodization; analyze the nation-wide activities for salt iodization; collect information and report to the Council of Ministers; scrutinize and upgrade national standards; monitor salt iodization activities. The real or legal persons that aim to manufacture or supply iodized salt should get the permit from Ministry of Public Health. The iodized salt manufacturers should pass required trainings. The Manufacturers should follow the standards of the United Nations Joint Expert Committee on Food Additives. The Ministry of Public Health should increase public awareness on advantages of the iodized salt. The Ministry of Mining is the responsible authority to observe and monitor crude salt extraction. The Department of Food and Medicines Quality Control shall monitor the quality of the iodized salt and determine the proper amount of iodized salt use.
