Abstract The Regulation sets guidelines on larger protected areas and bird sanctuaries in Svalbard, which have been established in 1973. The purpose of the document is to define the limitations of said areas preserving contiguous and undisturbed natural areas' (land and sea) habitats, ecosystems, species, landscape and cultural heritage. These areas shall also be referred to for research purposes of the Svalbard's natural and cultural heritage. Article 29 lists bird sanctuary zones. The protected areas shall not allow transport of any kind.
