Abstract The Regulation applies to the hunting of seales, which is not permitted to Norwegian vessels. Nevertheless, it is permitted to engage in this activity under specific criteria: vessels must be registered, vessel must be suitable and equipped for seal hunting and have capacity for board handling, that vessel's skipper must have participated in the Fisheries Directorate course for seal hunting in 2013 (this also applies to vessel's crew which did not participate in the Fisheries Directorate course for seal hunting in 2012), and a notification must be submitted for the participation within a specified time limit. Quota permitted to Norwegian vessels is to capture up to 25 000 one year and older harp seals in the West Ice (quota may be in the form of non-lactating animal) and up to 7 000 of one year and older harp seals in the East Ice. Period of permitted hunting in the Westice is from 10 April to 30 June. Period of permitted hunting in the Eastice goes from 20 March. Russian authorities shall establish end-date for hunting.
