Abstract

This Regulation applies to the geological storage of carbon dioxide in Sweden, the Swedish continental shelf and the Swedish EEZ. Article 6 of the 1996 Protocol to the 1972 Convention on the Prevention of Marine Pollution by Dumping of Wastes and Other Matter (SU 2000:48) requires a special agreement between Sweden and another confining state. Should Sweden not enter into such an agreement, the storage of carbon dioxide may not take place in a storage that spans both Swedish territory or the Swedish economic zone and the other territory or economic zone. The Act applies to the protection of Natura2000 environmental protected sites. The monitoring plan shall relate to the management of the risks identified in risk assessment of these storages, and shall contain detailed information of the inspection to take place during the operation of the main phases. The Regulation also provides for the protection of freshwater and more specifically water intended for human consumption.
