Abstract This Regional Law regulates management of protected areas of regional and local significance with a view of conservation of unique and typical ecosystems, wild flora and wild fauna species, genetic resources thereof and ecological education of the population. Protected areas shall be classified as follows: (a) natural parks; (b) state nature reserves; (c) nature monuments; (d) dendrological parks and botanical gardens; (e) health resorts; (f) protected wetlands; green belts; (g) water protection areas; and (h) urban forests. Expropriation of land under protected areas shall be prohibited (art. 1). Institution of protected areas can carried out either with or without expropriation of land (art. 5). Some categories of protected areas can be conceded on contractual basis to scientific research institutions for permanent (open-ended) management or for the period of no less than 25 years (art. 6).
