Abstract This Regional Law establishes legal basis for state regulation and state support for reindeer breeding with a view of conservation of traditional nature management and traditional economic activities of small indigenous population of the North of the Russian Federation. Basic directions of state regulation of reindeer breeding shall be as follows: (a) formation and functioning of civilized market of agricultural commodities of animal products of proper production; (b) formation of market infrastructure for transportation and trade of agricultural commodities originating from reindeer breeding; (c) scientific research; and (d) economic stimulation of reindeer breeding. State support shall be granted in the form of annual subsidies, compensation of purchase of animal feedstuffs for domestic reindeer and financing of veterinary service of reindeer.
