Abstract The main goals of environmental education, awareness and formation of environmental culture are: (a) raising the level of environmental culture, environmental awareness and environmental culture of the regional population, including the improvement of knowledge in the field of environmental protection and environmental security; (b) ensuring sustainable socio-economic development of the region, timely identification and elimination of the causes of anthropogenic environmental impact; (c) formation of a careful attitude to nature; and (d) conservation of biological and landscape diversity. The main tasks of environmental education, environmental awareness and formation of environmental culture are: (a) creation of a system of environmental education and formation of environmental culture; (b) involvement of children and youth in activities aimed at environmental protection, rational use of natural resources; (c) increasing the role of protected natural areas of regional significance as environmental education centers; (d) information support of the population of the region in the field of nature management, environmental protection and environmental security; (e) involvement of citizens, public associations and non-profit organizations in participation in environmental activities; (f) formation of a responsible attitude towards separate collection of solid municipal waste; and (g) training, retraining and advanced training of specialists in the field of nature management, environmental protection and environmental security. The main principles of the organization of environmental education and formation of environmental culture are: (a) consistency, continuity and complexity of environmental education and orientation to age and social groups of the population; (b) the focus of environmental education on sustainable socio-economic development of the region and the solution of practical problems to improve the quality of the environment; (c) openness and availability of information about the state of the environment; and (d) unity of ecological educational, cultural and information space, the development of relationships between organizations in the field of environmental education and formation of environmental culture.
