Abstract

This Regional Decree certifies that “Old-growth oak forests in the valleys of the rivers Medveditsa and Karamysh” shall be classified as landscape, constituted with a view of conservation of old age indigenous oak grove in the floodplains of the rivers Medveditsa and Karamysh in steppe zone of the Don plains. Some still growing trees are more than 150 years old of age and have trunk diameter 90-125 cm. Indigenous oak forests in the floodplains of the Medveditsa rivers and Karamysh are living representatives of the forests of the pre-agricultural period, once prevailing in the river valleys of the Don catchment in the regional territory. The following activities shall be prohibited: (a) all types of felling, except thinning, change in hydrological regime, grazing and passage of livestock, haymaking, laying communications, arranging landfills and littering of the territory, the passage of automobile and caterpillar transport outside existing road network, except for special equipment, land allotment for horticulture and gardening, other types of economic of activities and nature management that impede conservation, restoration and reproduction of natural complexes and their components. Authorized activities: (a) scientific research; (b) intermediate cutting; and (c) ecological education.
