Abstract

The present Act has been enacted by the Umbria Region with a view to protecting human health and territorial genetic resources, as well as to guaranteeing the quality of agricultural products. To this end, the Act regulates and encourages the consumption of quality agricultural and organic products and, on the other hand, promotes information and educational initiatives relating to such products and regarding the risks that arise from the use of products which contain genetically modified organisms. The Act consists of the following five Titles: (I) General Principles; (II) Cultivation, farming, experimentation, marketing and consumption of Genetically Modified Organisms; (III) Food Promotion, Information and Education; (IV) Penalties; (V) Final Provisions. In accordance with the precautionary principle and in order to protect biodiversity, the cultivation of genetically modified plants, even if for experimentation purposes, is forbidden. Article 5 concerns the labelling of products intended for animal or human consumption.
