Abstract

In order to protect human health and guarantee food safety, the Basilicata Region applies the precautionary principle in decisional procedures relating to genetically modified organisms and derivatives. The Region promotes and supports research and experimentation in the agricultural sector for attaining the following objectives: (a) biodiversity conservation; and (b) diversified agricultural systems. Title I of the Regional Act concerns genetically modified organisms. In particular, article 2 prohibits the cultivation and farming for any purpose of GMOs within lands which belong to the regional domain or protected areas. Article 4 prohibits the cultivation of genetically modified plants. Article 7 regards labelling of products destined to human consumption or animal feeding. Title II of the Act regards information, food education and controls. In particular, article 15 establishes the Control Commission for Genetically Modified Organisms and derivatives. Title IV lays down penalties.
