Abstract This Act makes provision for the control of ionizing radiation to ensure radiation safety and for this purpose establishes the Radiation Safety and Nuclear Security Authority, sets up a system of licensing for the handling of radioactive material and regulates the generating, management and disposal of radioactive waste. The Authority shall, among other things, regulate and control all radiation sources and practices for the adequate protection of people and the environment against the harmful effects of radiation and for the safety of practices and the security of radioactive sources. It shall cooperate with IAEA in the application of safeguards in accordance with an Agreement between the Republic of Mauritius and IAEA for the application of safeguards in connection with the Treaty on the Non-Proliferation of Nuclear Weapons, and establish a State system of accounting for, and control of, nuclear material. It shall also establish and implement, in collaboration with the Mauritius Revenue Authority, a system of control for the import and export of nuclear material and other radioactive material, or any other controlled items. The Authority shall, in coordination with the National Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Centre and other relevant national agencies, develop and maintain a national emergency preparedness and response plan.
