Abstract

The object of this Act is to protect the health and safety of people, and to protect property and the environment, from the harmful effects of radiation. A person who uses, manufactures, possesses, sells, acquires, stores, transports, installs, services, repairs, disposes of or otherwise deals with a radiation source must take all reasonable and practicable measures to ensure that undertaking that activity does not result in harm to the health or safety of persons or to the environment caused by radiation emitted from the radiation source. The Act comprises 10 Parts divided into 132 sections, making provisions on radiation safety mesures, offences, administration and enforcement. The Act also provides for the establishment of the Radiation Council which shall have the follwoing functions: issuing licences for dealing with regulated radiation sources; registering regulated radiation sources; advising the Minister on radiation protection issues; etc.
