Abstract This Act, consisting of 19 sections divided into five Chapters, creates the Punjab Commission on the Status of Women aimed at the empowerment of women, expansion their of opportunities for socio-economic development and the elimination of all forms of discrimination. It establishes composition, duties and responsibilities of the above mentioned Commission, entitled to perform the following functions: examine policies, programmes and other measures taken by the Government to achieve gender equality, empowerment of women and their representation and political participation, assess implementation and make suitable recommendations to the concerned authorities; review the Punjab legislation affecting the status and rights of women and suggest repeal, amendment or new legislation essential to eliminate discrimination, safeguard and promote the interest of women and achieve gender equality in accordance with the Constitution and obligations under national and international covenants and commitments; encourage research to generate information, analysis and studies and maintain a database relating to women and gender issues to provide knowledge and awareness for provincial policy and strategic action for women empowerment; develop interaction and dialogue with non-governmental organizations, experts and individuals in society and an active association with similar commissions and institutions in other territories for collaboration and action to achieve gender equality at the provincial, national, regional and international level; mobilize grants from provincial, national and international agency; monitor the implementation of strategic plans, annual work plan and the annual budget; implement instruments and obligations affecting women and girls to which Pakistan is a signatory, etc. Full text English Website www.punjablaws.gov.pk
