Abstract The present Provincial Act, consisting of nine Parts, regulates hunting and related inspection activities in order to protect and improve wildlife and with a view to protecting agriculture and forestry cultures against damages caused by game and hunting. To this end, the Act provides for the establishment of the Fauna Observatory which shall exercise technical and scientific functions under the competent Provincial Counsel. A hunting permit is compulsory, as referred to in article 5. Article 4 defines the species that may be harvested as well as precise hunting periods. The territory of the Autonomous Province of Bolzano shall be divided into the four hunting districts referred to in articles 6 to 10. Moreover, articles 14 and 15 specify authorized hunting gear and designate those areas where hunting is absolutely prohibited. In accordance with article 18, the Provincial Counsel competent in matter of hunting may issue special permits to capture or use certain mammals. Such permits may be granted exclusively to qualified personnel of scientific institutes and laboratories for studying purposes. Article 19 concerns game farming centres, for which an authorization issued by the competent Provincial Counsel is required. Article 19-bis regards the keeping of birds for ornamental purposes. Further provisions regulate game marketing (art. 20) and the introduction of game species (art. 21). The latter may take place only for repopulation purposes and previous issuance of a special authorization. Article 22 concerns embalming, upon authorization to be granted by the Provincial Council. Further provisions regulate: hunting reserves management (Part V); hunting institutions, such as the Hunting and Fisheries Office (Part VI); inspection (Part VII); damages caused by game and hunting activities (Part VIII); penalties (Part IX).
