Abstract

These Presidential Regulations provide for increasing public awareness for utilising natural products improving the quality of life and the public health, therefore it encourages the development and use of herbal medicine, as a material from traditional knowledge or cultural heritage, and the sustainable conservation of the natural resources. The Regulations define the following sources of herbal medicine: traditional knowledge and cultural heritage; raw materials in the form of biological resources, genetic resources, mineral resources, manufactured and processed on the basis of geographical indications, local wisdom, social and cultural heritage, in a sustainable manner; properties based on evidence, safety and quality requirements. The Regulations concern: strategies and programmes for strengthening research and innovation in the health sector through the use of herbal medicines; strategies and measures for protecting natural resources; protection of natural parks, forests and reserves, as well as marine and fishing areas, where the sources of herbal medicine can be found; definition of a roadmap for the development and utilisation of herbal medicine; monitoring, evaluation, control.
