Abstract With this Decree the Prespa National Park is established in the region of Florina. The park presents a unique habitat of important flora (Juniperus Foeditissima) and fauna species, especially birds. Therefore, protecting, maintaining and improving the natural environment of Prespa is required for scientific, cultural and economic development reasons and also for preserving the rare characteristics of the region. The park consists of two distinguished areas, the high protection zone (core or nucleo zone) of which 4.735 hectares are wetlands and 165 hectares are land, and the peripheral zone. The delimitation of those areas are described in the Decree. The Prespa National Park is also protected by both European and international law with a series of EU directives and international conventions on nature protection, which are incorporated into the Greek legislative framework.
