Abstract The President, with a view of ensuring protection of the population against radiation, preventing the spread of radionuclides, mitigating harmful effects on natural complexes and objects located within the boundaries of the Polesie State Radiation Ecological Reserve, decrees to set up national public environmental scientific research institution Polesie State Radiation Ecological Reserve on the territories of radioactive contamination zones as a result of the Chernobyl disaster, from which the population was evacuated and resettled, in order to restrict citizens' access to these territories, to ensure protection of the population against radiation, to perform radiation monitoring, to conduct radioecological research, to study wild flora and fauna, typical and unique ecosystems and landscapes, the natural course of environmental processes characteristic of the Pripyat Polesie. Distinctive features of the reserve are the presence of high levels of pollution of the natural environment as a result of the Chernobyl catastrophe by radionuclides, including transuranium isotopes, restoration of the natural state of biogeocenosis in connection with the reduction of anthropogenic impact.
