Abstract The national Marine Park of Zakynthos was created in 1999 with this Presidential Decree aiming at the protection and sustainable development of one of the most important sites in the Mediterranean region for the reproduction of the marine turtle Caretta Caretta and the Mediterranean monk seal Monachus Monachus. In the protected area there are included three Natura 2000 sites, according to the provisions of Directive 92/43/EEC, aiming at promoting the maintenance of biodiversity, as well as the protection of wild fauna and flora. The protected area is located at the southern part of Zakynthos and includes the islands Marathonisi, Pelouzo and Strofadia. The delimitation of the park, including geographical coordinates is described in articles 2 and 3. Specific measures for the administration of the park are set forth, including restrictive provisions on fishing activities, vessel navigation, and building construction in the surrounding areas of the park.
