Abstract This Law consisting of 80 articles divided in VIII Chapters aims at (i) raising the performance efficiency and service level of the companies operating in the field of production, transmission, distribution and sale of electricity; (ii) creating appropriate atmosphere that attracts investments to the electricity sector in order to cope with the increasing demand for electric power; and (iii) confirm the principles of transparency and anti-monopoly. The Law provides for open market for electricity generation and distribution, while maintaining transmission under State control through the ownership and monopoly of the national electricity transmission grid through the Egyptian Electricity Transmission Company (EETC). Main tasks of EETC are (i) operate an electricity transmission system properly achieving efficiency; (ii) manage and maintain the electricity transmission network; (iii) allow for connection with the transmission networks as per the prices approved by ERA; and (iv) secure power supply for qualified consumers via interim six-month agreements as per tariffs approved by ERA.
