Abstract

These Regulations, made under section 4 of the Agriculture (Control of Importation) Act, require a permit to be obtained from an authorised officer for: (a) plants living or dead, including packaging materials; (b) seeds of plants of any description; (c) soil (other than sterilised peat and special rooting compost); (d) material mixed with soil, as specified in the First Schedule. These items may be only imported if accompanied by a phytosanitary certificate together with a special certificate or additional declaration as the case may require. Some plants or plants materials specified in the First Schedule may not be imported at all. Application for a permit shall be made to the Plant Quarantine Service of the Federal Department of Agricultural Research. The Regulations also provide for treatment of illegally imported items, for the examination and sampling of imports and powers of authorised officers to impose conditions to which a permit may be subject.
