Abstract

This Act amends the Pharmacy and Poisons Act 1979 to, among other thing: improve the administration of the pharmacy sector; ensure the Ministry has sufficient regulatory power to restrict and prevent the importation, distribution and sale of all drugs for medicinal use; to remove references to poisons in the Act; and for related purposes. It amends the Act in various provisions concerning, among other things: definitions for “association”, “drug”, “drug product”, “practitioner”, “prescription” and “registered pharmacist"; the Pharmacy Council; the register of pharmacists. It also establishes the Pharmacy Complaints Committee, provides for its functions and investigation powers and provides rules for the handling of complaints. A consequential amendment is made to the Pharmacy and Poisons (Control of Prescriptions) Regulations 1979.
