Abstract

Regulations exist at state (Länder) level regarding the procedure and regularity of forest inventories. At Federal level, an ordinance is issued with every national forest inventory. The most recent ordinance regards the fourth forest inventory, which will be conducted from 1st April 2021 until 31st December 2022 which is regulated by this ordinance. The sampling procedure is carried out with a uniform, systematic measurement of samples over the entire territory of the Federal Republic of Germany, whereby the federal forest inventory is set up by a 4 x 4 km2 system. More specific regulations to be found in the Annex. The basic data measured at the sample points covers: 1. Operating mode, 2. Type of property, 3. Forest structure, 4. Tree types, 5. Age, 6. Tree diameter, 7. Tree height on selected sample trees, 8. Terrain features, 9. special tree features, 10. dead wood, and 11. land use before or after forest.
