Abstract The Summer Grazing Ordinance is based on the recommendations of the Swiss Federal Food Safety and Veterinary Office (BLV) for the harmonization of the summer grazing regulations of the cantons. According to this Ordinance only animals of the cattle species that are not subject to a BVD ban may be herded onto the summer farm or summer pasture. For this purpose, the Alpvogt has to check the BVD status of the animals in the animal traffic database before they go up the mountain. The Ordinance contains 38 Articles divided into 8 Sections and referring among others to requirements for herds, and requirements for Alpine dairies, regulations for border grazing, cost bearing and fees, organisation and implementation, and penal provisions.
