Abstract

This Order establishes that Sanitary and Epidemiological Norms and Regulations for collection, treatment, storage, transportation and burial of medical waste shall be mandatory for all natural and legal persons. Medical waste shall be classified in five classes of hazardousness: (a) non-hazardous solid medical waste; (b) hazardous (dangerous) medical waste; (c) extremely dangerous medical waste; (d) medical waste similar to industrial waste by composition; and (e) radioactive medical waste. Waste management shall include the following stages: (a) collection and treatment of medical waste in places of waste formation; (b) provisional storage of medical waste in containers; (c) transportation of containers to the burial grounds or to the burning places (thermal treatment); and (d) thermal treatment (burning) or burial of medical waste.
