Abstract

In pursuance of the directions of the National Green Tribunal and the powers conferred by sub-section (3) of Section 3 read with Section 5 of the Environment (Protection) Act, 1986, the Department of Water Resources, River Development & Ganga Rejuvenation issues new guidelines to regulate and control groundwater extraction. These aim at sustainable management of water resources in the country and seek to regulate groundwater extraction and to conserve the scarce groundwater resources in the country. The guidelines will apply to the whole of India. Ground water abstraction in States/UTs (which are not regulating ground water abstraction) shall continue to be regulated by Central Ground Water Authority.
