Abstract

National Standard GOSTR 53598-2009 Food products. Instructions for labelling applies to food products and establishes the rules for their labelling. There are two ways to label packaging: (a) all mandatory information about the product is placed on the front of the label - the main display strip (MDS); and (b) other information is placed on the information strip. The main display strip is the part of the label on the package that the consumer is most likely to see upon purchase. Many packages have one or more different strips that can function as a strip as an MDS. They are called additional display strips. The main and additional display strips must contain the text of the name of the food product, indicating the net weight or volume of the product. To make inscriptions on the information strip of the label, it is necessary to use a font of such a size that the inscription is embossed, catchy and easily distinguishable. Lowercase characters should be used with a minimum size of 1.58 mm in height of the letter “o”. The height of the characters should not exceed their width by more than three times, and the alphabetic text should contrast sufficiently with the background and be easily distinguishable. It is not allowed to overload mandatory inscriptions with decoration or text that is not required by the regulations. It is allowed to use a smaller font size for inscriptions on the information strip of small packages. It is not allowed to place non-essential information, additional information or information of an advertising nature in the gap inside the regulatory inscriptions of the label on the information strip (the universal bar code of the product is not classified as a regulatory inscription). The name of the food product must be clear, specific and descriptive of the product and appear on the front of the label or on the main display strip, as well as on any additional strip.
