Abstract The National Policy for the Comprehensive Advancement and Development of Women (PNPDIM) and the Equal Opportunity Plan (PEO) 2008–2023 are a cross-sectoral policy and plan to be implemented at the national level for a period of 15 years, from 2008 to 2023. The main objective of the PNDPIM and PEO is to promote the development of Mayan, Garifuna, Xinca and mestizo women in all spheres of economic, social, political and cultural life. The PNDPIM and PEO also provide for the following three specific objectives: 1) verify, monitor and follow up the implementation process of the PNPDIM and PEO at the different levels of government; 2) periodically evaluate the result of the implementation of the PNPDIM and its effect on the lives of women; and 3) integrate the different policy lines, programmes and goals of the PNPDIM and PEO in the different general and specific policies of the ministries, secretariats and institutions of the Executive branch. The PNDPIM and PEO are divided into 12 policy lines, each of them have their respective programmes, sub-programmes, projects and activities. The 12 policy lines are: 1) economic and productive development with equity; 2) natural resources, land, and housing; 3) educational equity with cultural relevance; 4) equity in the development of comprehensive health with cultural relevance; 5) eradication of violence against women; 6) legal equity; 7) racism and discrimination against women; 8) equity and identity in cultural development; 9) employment equity; 10) institutional mechanisms; 11) socio-political participation; and 12) cultural identity of mayan, garifuna and xinca women.
