Abstract

This Act provides for various matters relating to marine sanctuaries such as the designation of sanctuaries in two States, enhancing support for national marine sanctuaries, research to improve management of sanctuaries, the establishment of a sanctuary in Florida, the protection of marine phytoplankton, and makes technical amendments to the Coastal Zone Management Act of 1972. The Secretary of Commerce shall conduct a 2-year pilot project to enhance funding for designation and management of national marine sanctuaries. The measures to enhance funding include the finding and designation of persons as sponsors, the creation, adoption, and publication in the Federal Register of a symbol for the national marine sanctuary program or for individual sanctuaries, and the authorization of the use of the symbol by the sponsors (sect. 2204).
