The Regulations provide a detailed list of wildlife species to which the provisions apply to. These regulations shall apply to specimen of wildlife species listed in Appendix I, II,, or III to the Convention on International Trade in Endangered Species of Wild Fauna and Flora domesticated by the Endangered Species (Control of International Trade and Traffic) Act, CAP 19, Laws of the Federation of Nigeria, 2004, (and shall include wildlife species included by the Convention after the coming into force of these Regulations) and also those listed in the Schedules I and II to the Act. The Regulations generally prohibit the import or export of species listed therein, or the possession of said specimen. Under exceptional circumstances, a permit may be granted in the prohibited and restricted activities involving the endangered species. The Regulations provide stiff fines and heavy prison terms for the violation of its provisions. The Federal Ministry of Environment is designated as the CITES Management Authority for Nigeria.
